Baton Rouge: Red Stick
Andy Gregg

Baton Rouge: Red Stick first appeared as a promotional poster and web site created by designer and illustrator Andy Gregg, who worked for Zehnder, a Louisiana-based ad agency. Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau commissioned this work to promote Baton Rouge through print as well as web.  The message is to showcase Baton Rouge and entice visitors to come.  I believe this promo poster was created on the computer. I don’t feel like this influences the message in a bad way.  Solid blocks of color created by the computer, limit textural effects that appear when using printmaking ink or paint.  The solid sheen from the printer limits your eye movement helping simplify the overall image so you can focus on the smaller architectural items within the scene.  Monochromatic shades of reds within the city also limit eye movement to overall shape of the object rather than color.  The style of the overall image meets the sender’s needs by bringing your focus to Baton Rouge: Red Stick.  Red Stick is the nickname for this ornate city.  By limiting his color pallet to shades of red he now says Red Stick as well as shows Red Stick in color and imagery.   I feel this choice meets the needs of the audience, whether they realize it or not.   They can now see and imagine the Red Stick.  I feel the message here also meets Andy Gregg’s needs as he has been commissioned to created many landscape portraits in this style.
